How to Price Your Work Right

Getting started is the hardest part. Telling a client how much you charge for your work isn’t easy. Some people fear they’ll ask for too much and scare the client away. Others undercharge and fall into the trap of “cheap services,” losing motivation over time. So how can you price yourself fairly and with a clear conscience?

1. Calculate your costs and add your desired profit

Don’t just count materials—include your time, energy, software, education, taxes, and marketing. Then add the profit you actually want. For example, if your monthly expenses are CZK 40,000 and you want to earn CZK 60,000, you should be invoicing CZK 100,000 per month. That’s your reality.

2. Set a minimum hourly rate

Try to calculate how many hours you actually work per month. If you calculate 80 billable hours, divide your target monthly income by that number. Now you know the lowest hourly rate you should accept.

3. Don’t sell yourself short

We often hesitate to say a price that feels “too high.” But that price often reflects our expertise, quality, and responsibility. Believe in yourself. Someone who states their price calmly comes across as professional.

4. Focus on the value you bring

Instead of saying “I sell my time,” try saying “I help clients grow, streamline operations and save money.” Shift the focus to the value of the outcome. Your price won’t seem high if it’s clear what the client gets in return.
